STOV Manufacturers Report Earnings

In the past few weeks a number of publicly traded STOV manufacturers have reported earnings. While the economic downturn has significantly impacted the market, both Polaris and Arctic Cat report gaining market share in ATVs and UTVs during this time. Both companies have also embarked on programs to develop more frequent dealer ordering cycles to reduce dealer inventories and better react to market demands by creating a more desirable model mix at the retail point of sale.

Arctic Cat reported that through the first half of the year the ATV sales declined 20% but in the side by side market some segments have actually shown growth. Artic Cat reports gaining market share in both the ATV and UTV markets.

Polaris reported in their earnings call with analysts that the ATV market was down more than 15% while the side by side market was making some gains. Management expects the economic recovery to be choppy. Polaris reports taking market share in the ATV and UTV markets while Honda and Yamaha are struggling. The LSV market has been smaller than expected in the short term, but management expects it to be a growing niche market that they are taking the time to learn before developing growth strategies.

Polaris is also starting to roll out vehicles for their partnership with Bobcat. The initial dealer reception to the vehicles has been positive. An offshoot of that development program was the addition of diesel powered vehicles in the Polaris line-up targeting work customers in North America and global markets as well as the military market where diesel is the fuel of choice. Yanmar is providing Polaris with diesel engines. The electric Ranger LSV serves the military market as well. During the call management also noted that some production had been moved to Mexico since much of their growth in the US is occurring in the southern part of the country.

Mahindra & Mahindra Buys Majority Stake In Reva

Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), India’s leading producer of SUVs, recently purchased a 55% stake in electric vehicle producer Reva.  Maini Group will have a 31% and AEV LLC of California, the joint venture partner, will have 11% stake.  The deal included a $10 million cash infusion for Reva, which has produced 3,500 electric vehicles to date. According to reports, 400 vehicles were sold last year mainly in Britain, Germany and Spain.

M&M expects the Indian market for electric vehicles to grow substantially and by 2020 expect to be producing 50,000 electric vehicles annually.  Some of the new funds for Reva will be used to increase their current production capacity from 6,000 to 30,000 vehicles per year.  A consequence of this deal is that Reva’s work with GM to develop the electric mini Spark has been called off.  Learn more:  Vamban.com

CARB Launches Rebate Program For Electric UTVs For Agriculture

Earlier this week the California Air Resources Board announced they would start  taking rebate applications for their Agricultural UTV Rebate
Project which targets electric UTVs for agricultural operations.  Eligible vehicles will qualify for a rebate of 15% of MSRP up to $2,500.  Manufacturers currently with models eligible for rebates include Bad Boy Enterprises, Barefoot Motors, Polaris Industries, John Deere and ZAP.  Rebates for models on the eligible list range from $825 to $1,950.

To receive a rebate the purchaser must be classified as a California agricultural operation.  The statewide program is being administered by the San Joquin Valley Air Pollution Control District and has nearly $1 million available for rebates.   Rebates  are given on a first come first serve basis and there is no limit on the number of vehicles for which a purchaser can receive a rebate.  Only new vehicles qualify.

A rough calculation, assuming an average rebate of around $1,600 per vehicle, means over 600 vehicles will be covered by the program.  This would represent a sizable share of the electric UTV market.   Learn more:  Valleyair.org
