According to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newswire.ca\/en\/releases\/archive\/December2008\/05\/c7525.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">press release<\/a> from the Ontario Ministry of Transportation<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<pre>Low-speed electric vehicles can be driven safely on public roads as long\nas they include a number of additional safety requirements and follow\nappropriate road restrictions, according to a National Research Council study\nreleased today by the Ontario government.<\/pre>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The list of additional safety requirements based on the National Research Council study includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Windshield wipers<\/li>\n<li>Windshield defogger and heating system<\/li>\n<li>Doors<\/li>\n<li>Three-point seat belts<\/li>\n<li>Slow-moving vehicle identification emblem<\/li>\n<li>Seat belt anchors<\/li>\n<li>Brakes on all four wheels<\/li>\n<li>Federal standards for occupant protections<\/li>\n<li>Safety glass on all windows<\/li>\n<li>Only permitted on roads with a speed limit of 50 km\/h or less<\/li>\n<li>Infants and children may not be permitted to ride in an LSV<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The complete report from the National Research Council should be available <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mto.gov.on.ca\/english\/dandv\/vehicle\/emerging\/lsvtechreport.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">here (pdf)<\/a> but the link was not working as of this posting.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ontario will allow low speed vehicles on public roads as long as they have certain safety features.
